Sleeping Sluggards, Slogans & Screen-time

Greetings of Happy New Year and annual slogans will be common during the early weeks of the New Year. Thousands will attend fasting sessions, prayer meetings, fellowships, conferences, vigils and other activities to help them achieve their desires for the year. Others will paste stickers displaying their church slogan, ‘2020: My Year of ‘whatever is their goal for the year.’ Many will regularly chant these slogans and their related affirmations as they prepare to commence work or school in the New Year. The truth is that the distance from 2019 to 2020 was ‘just one second.’ If one does not behave differently from 2019, 2020 will bring similar results.

Although the two years are only a second apart, it pays to set goals that will reflect the levels we desire to reach in the New Year. We need to develop a goal-setting and implementing mindset this period as well. Otherwise, the year may end with no meaningful achievement. If there is one model we mustn’t adopt in the year 2020, it’s the sluggard’s model.

In Proverbs 21:25, the writer says, ‘The desire of the sluggard puts him to death, For his hands refuse to work.’ Proverbs 13:4 says, ‘the soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing. But the soul of the diligent is made fat.’

The sluggard is not only the one who has a lot of sleep time. It also includes today’s sluggards who have a lot of screen time!

A study has shown that compared to previous periods, people spend more time than ever watching videos, browsing social media and swiping their lives away on their tablets and smartphones. American adults spend more than 11 hours per day watching, reading, listening to or simply interacting with media, according to a new study by market-research group Nielsen. I do not have the screen time statistics for Nigeria. But I won’t be surprised if they are similar to the result above.

Bottom line: Avoid living like the sluggard who wants without working and follows frivolities. In addition to whatever slogan or affirmation you chant regularly, please endeavour to set annual goals for the year. Furthermore, create daily bite-sized targets that will propel you towards the overall goals. Then, can we increase our chances of achieving the success that is declared in our slogans. My prayer is that 2020 will be your best year ever!

Happy New Year!
